Eddie Van Halen Was a ‘Big Influence’ on ‘Bill and Ted,’ Writer Ed Solomon Tweets, Reveals He Wanted Him in ‘Face the Music’

Eddie Van Halen has died. The legendary guitarist and founding member of Van Halen was 65. 

Van Halen’s son Wolf Van Halen introduced the information in an Oct. 6 tweet

“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” he wrote. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.”

The information of Van Halen’s demise was met with an outpouring of grief on-line. Family, pals, and followers all shared their recollections of and tributes to the musician. Among these reflecting on Van Halen’s legacy was Ed Solomon, the co-writer (with Chris Matheson) of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and its sequels Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and Bill & Ted Face the Music. 

“Super sad to hear about the passing of Eddie Van Halen,” Solomon tweeted. “He was an enormous affect on Chris & me as we had been writing Bill & Ted. In truth, when director Stephen Herek was studying the script he received three pages in, stopped, placed on 1984 & resumed. We needed the film to be a cinematic ‘Jump.’”

Bill & Ted’s would-be rock stars Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) are big followers of Van Halen. In an early scene in Excellent Adventure, the pair interact in a round dialogue about the way forward for their band, Wyld Stallyns. 

“Ted, while I agree that, in time, our band will be most triumphant, the truth is, Wyld Stallyns will never be a super band until we get Eddie Van Halen on guitar,” Bill tells his friend. 

“Yes, Bill, however I don’t imagine we’ll get Eddie Van Halen earlier than we’ve a triumphant video,” Bill replies. 

But earlier than they will make a triumphant video, Bill and Ted resolve, they want Van Halen to show them find out how to truly play their devices. The dialog hints on the paradox of time journey as depicted within the movie. 

Later, after the pair journey by time to finish their historical past venture, Bill pretends to be a “Deputy Van Halen” when he calls Ted’s police officer father to inform him he’s discovered his misplaced keys. 

Winter responded on Twitter to the information of Van Halen’s demise with a crying emoji and a single-word: “Ugh.” 

Solomon needed Eddie Van Halen to be included in ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ 

In the Bill & Ted motion pictures, the time-traveling duo by no means achieve getting Van Halen to affix their band. But in a tweet, Solomon revealed that he had hoped Van Halen might play some half within the lately launched Bill & Ted Face the Music.
