The buzz round The Rise of Skywalker has settled down, with the film wanting prefer it’s going to be the least financially profitable of the sequel trilogy. Many followers felt like Episode IX performed like a rush job, with sloppy ret-cons that felt like they have been pandering. However, there’s a retcon that continues to be as but unresolved.

That’s a retcon revolving Poe Dameron, performed by Oscar Isaac. That might sound stunning to followers who solely take note of the flicks, the place his story appeared fairly easy. However, Episode IX altered the way in which his backstory performed out in Star Wars novels.

What was Poe’s story?

The Force Awakens didn’t reveal a ton about Poe. We realized that he’s a hotshot insurgent pilot who shouldn’t be afraid to take dangers to a fault. He’s reckless however he’s fiercely loyal, and he fashioned a very robust attachment to Finn.

The Last Jedi began off with Poe, who was not taking a battle all that critically whereas taking it very critically. His daring techniques assist the Resistance, however Leia doesn’t take effectively to having her orders disobeyed. When Leia is recovering from an assault, Poe runs afoul of Admiral Holdo, organizing a mutiny, till he belatedly realizes Holdo had a degree.

In The Rise of Skywalker, Poe is much less central to the motion, as he’s there with Finn to assist Rey will get the help she must defeat Palpatine. We study a little bit about his previous through Zoni Bliss, performed by an obscured Keri Russell. Given all this info, Poe’s story appears easy, without having for fixes. But there may be extra to Star Wars than films.

What about Poe has to vary?

In The Rise of Skywalker, we realized that Poe had been a spice runner earlier than he joined the Resistance, making him not not like Han Solo  in that each have been smugglers and each have been and are scoundrels. Han and Poe interacted little or no if in any respect within the sequel trilogy, however they appeared to share a kinship of a shady previous was a heroic future.

Screen Rant explains that in comics and novels printed previous to Episode IX, Poe was the son of two Resistance fighters, and Poe follows of their footsteps after his mom’s dying. Poe joined the New Republic Defense Fleet, after which joined the Resistance after Leia based it. These tales didn’t lean into the scoundrel a part of Poe’s character.

So now a brand new Star Wars novel known as Poe Dameron: Free Fall will particulars Poe’s very early years when he has a headstrong, hotshot teenager. That feels extra in keeping with the swaggering character that Oscar Isaac performed. Once retconned, all will likely be proper within the Star Wars world, no less than so far as Poe is anxious.

Star Wars has all the time had sloppy retcons

Longtime followers might discover these shenanigans amusing as a result of wonky retcons have been half and parcel of Star Wars since no less than 1980. The revelation that Darth Vader was Luke’s father made it appear to be Obi-Wan flat-out lied to Luke about his father’s backstory.

In Return of the Jedi, Obi-Wan chalked that as much as “a certain point of view.”

Even odder was the revelation that Luke and Leia have been twin siblings. This made the romantic edge the characters had within the authentic Star Wars appear downright creepy. Just think about how this Star Wars dialogue performs now:

Luke: So what do you consider (Leia), Han?

Han: I’m attempting to not, child.

Luke (glad smirk): Good

Audience: Ewwww.

George Lucas made the retcon even sloppier in Revenge of the Sith, when he determined to have Padme die in childbirth.  So how come Leia says she remembers her mother in Return of the Jedi and that she largely appeared unhappy? Not even the Force ought to have the ability to assist an individual retain reminiscences in infancy.

As Harrison Ford usually informed George Lucas, “You can write this stuff, but you sure can’t say it.”
